Fine Print

Trip Suitability

  • This independent itinerary through Vilnius, Riga, and Tallinn offers a blend of history, culture, and scenic charm. While the itinerary is well-planned, independent travel always invites a degree of unpredictability. Flexibility and a sense of adventure will ensure you make the most of your Baltic journey.
  • The Baltic capitals are compact and walkable, but many streets in the old towns are cobblestone, and some attractions may require navigating stairs or uneven surfaces. Comfortable footwear and a reasonable level of fitness are essential to enjoy the experience fully.
  • The Baltic region is known for its affordability compared to many European destinations, but costs can vary. Dining, museum fees, and optional activities may require some budgeting, particularly in Tallinn, which tends to be the priciest of the three capitals. Local tips on where to dine and what to explore will help you make the most of your time and budget.
  • This itinerary focuses on self-guided exploration, giving you the freedom to set your own pace. However, certain iconic sites, such as Riga's Art Nouveau district or Tallinn’s medieval Old Town, are popular and may require advance bookings for tours or activities to secure your preferred times.
  • Please note that weather in the Baltics can be unpredictable, with occasional rain or cooler temperatures, even in summer. Packing layers and a lightweight rain jacket will help you stay comfortable no matter the conditions.

Visas & Entry Requirements
Many countries require a visa and obtaining the correct visa for your tour and any countries you may transit through is your responsibility. We recommend you check your visa requirements as soon as you have booked your tour. This will ensure you have time to prepare your documents and for your visa application to be processed. You can check the visa entry requirements for your nationality via our page here:

https://inspiringvacations-8357211.hs-sites.com/visa-information

You’ll need a valid passport to travel internationally and most countries require your passport to have a minimum of 6 months validity, so remember to check the expiry date.

We need your passport information to get everything ready for your tour so the information on your booking must match your passport exactly. Please take care to provide the correct details. We recommend carrying a copy of the photo page of your passport while travelling and leaving a copy at home with family or friends.

Travel Insurance
Travel insurance is strongly recommended on all our tours. We require that at a minimum you are covered for medical expenses including emergency repatriation. It is also important to consider forced pre-tour cancellations and how your chosen insurance policy may cover such circumstances, so please keep this in mind when choosing your provider.

We strongly recommend all travellers have a policy that also covers personal liability, cancellation, curtailment and loss of luggage or personal effects. For international tours, you will be asked by your tour leader for your travel insurance details if they were not already added to your Traveller Hub account pre-departure.

If you have credit card insurance your Inspiring Vacations tour leader or local guide may require details of the participating insurer/underwriter, the level of coverage, policy number, and emergency contact number rather than the bank's name and your credit card details. Please contact your bank for these details before arriving in-country.

Before you depart, you will be asked to submit your Travel Insurance details through the booking holder's Traveller Hub account through the Inspiring Vacations website. This is to ensure that we have this information readily available should we ever need it.

Health & Wellness
All travellers need to be in good physical health to participate fully on this tour. Our group tours are designed to immerse you in incredible sights and activities, often involving walking tours and self-exploration. To ensure you can fully embrace every moment, we recommend a moderate level of fitness for all of our tours.

When selecting your tour please make sure you have read through the itinerary carefully and assess your ability to manage and enjoy our style of travel. Please note that in the assessment of our Inspiring Vacations Tour Leader or local representative a traveller is unable to complete the itinerary without undue risk to themselves and/or the rest of the group, we reserve the right to exclude them from all or part of a tour without refund.

You should consult your doctor for up-to-date medical travel information or for any necessary vaccinations before departure. We recommend that you carry a first aid kit as well as any personal medical requirements in their original packaging as they may not easily be obtained while travelling. If you are carrying medication, ensure you check your government's foreign travel advice for any local restrictions or requirements. For the safety and wellbeing of yourself and others, if you are unwell before travelling, please stay at home and contact us to make alternative arrangements and we would be more than happy to assist you.

Important Information for Customers with Mobility Limitations

We want to ensure everyone has a fantastic and inclusive experience on our tours. If you require the use of a mobility aid, such as a cane, walker, or wheelchair, please disclose this information at the time of booking.

To ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience for the entire group, our tours are designed with a specific itinerary in mind. This may involve moderate walking, uneven terrain, or stairs. While some itinerary adjustments may not be possible, we'll do our best to find alternative solutions within the planned activities whenever possible.

Open communication helps us ensure your tour is a perfect fit and it allows your local guide or tour leader to assist you where possible.

Information for CPAP Users

If you use a CPAP machine, please let us know at the time of booking. Some portions of our itinerary, like overnight cruises or camping tours, may have limited access to power outlets. In such cases, we recommend travelling with portable battery packs.

Certain activities, like overnight journeys on board smaller vessels, may not be suitable for CPAP use due to space limitations or noise concerns. We can discuss these potential limitations upfront and help you make informed decisions about your tour.

Please ensure that you check the voltage used throughout the countries you are travelling to and if it will be compatible with your machines. For example, Japan runs on 100 volts vs Australia at 220-240 volts, meaning a voltage converter might be required.

Documentation
Tour documentation is typically emailed to the lead passenger or your travel agent between 14-30 days before your scheduled departure. This will include your final hotel list.

During your booking journey, you might have received an email inviting you to join a special Facebook group dedicated to your chosen destination. These vibrant online communities are exclusively for Inspiring Vacations travellers headed to the same incredible place. Joining this group unlocks a wealth of information and connections. Swap travel tips, share packing insights, or even see if anyone's interested in travelling together.

Starting Point
Your starting hotel may differ from the original itinerary.  Please refer to your final documentation which will be provided approximately 14-30 days before departure for your confirmed hotel list. If you need to book pre-tour accommodation independently, we suggest you do this only once you have received your final hotel list for your tour. If you would like to book something sooner, we recommend that you book using a flexible rate that can be cancelled through your chosen third-party provider without penalty.

Travellers will arrive at various times throughout the day depending on flights booked. If arriving before standard check-in time, which is generally 3pm, you are welcome to leave your luggage at hotel reception and explore your surroundings until check-in becomes available as there are no scheduled activities on day 1 of the itinerary.  The hotel may grant early check-in, however this is strictly subject to availability and at the hotel’s discretion.

Note: if you need to apply for a tourist visa before departure, we recommend using the details of the suggested hotel on the tour itinerary if you wish to fulfil this before the release of your final tour documentation. Please refer to our visa section for more information on whether or not a visa is required for your destination.

Arrival Details
Airport transfers are not included as part of your package. However, we trust that your journey from the airport to the hotel will be comfortable and hassle-free.

To make your way to your hotel from the airport, there are various connections by public transport or limousine bus. The airport information desks can provide helpful advice, too.

Getting Around
This independent tour allows you to explore the Baltic capitals—Vilnius, Riga, and Tallinn—at your own pace, traveling between cities on local buses. This mode of transport offers a great opportunity to experience the region like a local while enjoying scenic views of the Baltic countryside along the way.

  • Premium inter-City Bus Travel
Your package includes inter-city Lux Express bus tickets between Vilnius, Riga, and Tallinn. You can expect  a comfortable and seamless journey aboard modern, well-equipped coaches. The routes connect the capitals of Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia with frequent departures, offering a smooth travel experience. Passengers can relax in spacious seats, enjoy free Wi-Fi, and take advantage of entertainment systems. To read more about Lux Express please see HERE.
  • Luggage Considerations
You’ll need to carry your luggage on and off the bus, so packing light is essential. A suitcase or backpack that you can easily manage on your own is recommended. Most buses have undercarriage compartments for large bags, but space for hand luggage is limited to what fits comfortably in the overhead compartments or at your seat.
  • Navigating Bus Stations
Bus stations in the Baltics are straightforward to navigate, but some may require walking between ticket counters and departure gates or using stairs. Arriving at the station at least 30 minutes before your departure will help ensure a smooth boarding process.

Travel Times
You can find estimated travel times for each day you will be travelling between cities within the itinerary

Hotel Ratings
Star ratings can differ between countries, reflecting diverse standards and amenities. To give you the most accurate picture possible, we don't just rely on a single source for hotel ratings. We go beyond by researching various trusted travel websites like Tripadvisor and Booking.com. This allows us to analyse a wider range of genuine customer reviews and experiences, giving you a well-rounded understanding of the hotel's typical star rating.

This means you can book with confidence, knowing the hotel has a strong track record of satisfied guests.

Accommodation Details
In the Baltics, we have carefully selected 4-star hotels to enhance your comfort and enjoyment throughout your journey. These accommodations are centrally located, providing convenient access to the historic Old Towns and key attractions in Vilnius, Riga, and Tallinn.

It’s worth noting that European hotel star ratings can vary from what you might expect in other regions, but all selected hotels offer quality amenities and a relaxing environment. This blend of comfort and excellent locations ensures you’ll have a welcoming retreat after each day of exploration.

Luggage Requirements
As this is an independent trip, you will be responsible for carrying your luggage, as well as getting it on and off the buses between cities. Please ensure that your luggage is packed in a way that allows you to carry it comfortably and unassisted throughout the journey.

By following these guidelines and packing light, you will ensure a smooth and hassle-free travel experience during your trip.

Packing Essentials
What you need to pack for your tour will vary according to the trip style you have chosen, the countries you are visiting and when you are travelling. We recommend you pack as lightly as possible, ensuring that you can carry and lift your luggage, and walk with it for short distances or up or down a flight of stairs.

A lockable suitcase with wheels is ideal for this trip. Many tours will include internal flights which often have luggage weight restrictions, and it is recommended that you keep your main luggage weight around 15kg and no more than 20kg. A small or medium-sized backpack (45-50 litres) is another good option. You'll also need a day pack/bag to carry water, a camera, a jacket, and your essentials while touring during the day.

Clothing: Pack a mix of lightweight and warm layers. Long sleeves and pants are beneficial for mosquito protection. Choose clothes that are easy to wash and dry.

Footwear: Closed-in shoes are recommended to protect your feet from injuries and potential bites or stings, whether you're walking in urban areas or through nature.

Sun Protection: Bring a hat, sunscreen, and sunglasses to shield yourself from the sun.

Warm Gear: Mountains and hill regions can get cold at night. A light, warm waterproof jacket is advisable.

Medical Kit: It's good to carry personal items like mild painkillers, electrolytes, Band-Aids, and insect repellent. Ensure you are travelling with any prescription medication that you may need.

Water Bottle: A capacity of at least 1.5 litres is recommended to reduce the environmental impact of bottled water.

Camera/Phone: Don’t forget to bring something to capture memories.

Comfort Items: Earplugs can help with noisy environments, a good book or journal for downtime, and a music player for entertainment.

Please take note of the following important instructions regarding luggage for this tour:.

Climate
The climate in the Baltic capitals—Vilnius, Riga, and Tallinn—varies significantly depending on the season, so it’s essential to pack appropriately for your visit.

Spring (March to May):

Spring in the Baltics is cool and fresh, with temperatures ranging from 5°C to 15°C (41°F to 59°F) as the season progresses. It’s a great time to visit if you enjoy fewer crowds and blooming landscapes, but layers and a lightweight jacket are recommended for the chilly mornings and evenings.

Autumn (September to November):

Autumn brings cooler temperatures, ranging from 5°C to 15°C (41°F to 59°F), and a stunning display of fall foliage. This season is perfect for travelers who enjoy crisp weather and cozy evenings. Warm layers, a waterproof jacket, and sturdy shoes for exploring cobblestone streets are recommended.

Winter (December to February):

Winter in the Baltics is cold, with temperatures often dropping below freezing, ranging from -5°C to -15°C (23°F to 5°F). Snowfall is common, especially in Tallinn, creating a magical, wintry atmosphere. Pack warm clothing, including thermal layers, a heavy coat, gloves, a scarf, and a hat to stay comfortable while exploring.

Currency and ATMs
In Vilnius, Riga, and Tallinn, the currency used is the Euro (EUR), making transactions straightforward across all three Baltic capitals. ATMs are widely available in cities and tourist areas, and major international credit and debit cards are generally accepted at hotels, restaurants, and larger shops.

While card payments are common in urban areas, it’s a good idea to carry some cash for smaller purchases, markets, and establishments that may not accept cards. Coins and smaller denominations are especially handy for public transport, tips, or local snacks from street vendors.

If you’re travelling outside the city centres, ATMs may be less accessible, so it’s wise to withdraw cash in advance when exploring rural or remote areas. Inform your bank of your travel plans to avoid any issues with card transactions while abroad.

Food and Allergies
The Baltic capitals offer a rich culinary experience, blending traditional flavors with modern influences. Local dishes often feature hearty ingredients such as potatoes, rye bread, fish, pork, and seasonal vegetables, reflecting the region's farming and fishing heritage. Be sure to try specialties like Lithuanian cepelinai (potato dumplings), Latvian rye bread soup, and Estonian black bread with smoked fish.

For travellers with food allergies or dietary restrictions, options are increasingly available, especially in larger cities. Many restaurants cater to common dietary needs such as gluten-free, vegetarian, and vegan meals, though it’s always a good idea to communicate your requirements clearly. In traditional establishments, menus may be less accommodating, so planning ahead or dining at more contemporary venues can help ensure your needs are met.

When dining out, staff in most urban restaurants speak English and are happy to assist with allergy-related inquiries. However, having translations of your dietary needs or allergies in the local languages (Lithuanian, Latvian, or Estonian) can be helpful when visiting smaller eateries or rural areas.

The Baltics are known for their warm hospitality, and with a little preparation, you can enjoy the unique flavors of the region while accommodating your dietary needs.

Local Customs
When visiting Vilnius, Riga, and Tallinn, it’s helpful to be aware of a few local customs and cultural nuances to ensure a respectful and enjoyable experience.

  • Respect for History and Heritage:
The Baltics have a rich history and a strong sense of national pride, especially regarding their struggles for independence. When discussing history, approach sensitive topics like the Soviet or Nazi occupations with respect and awareness. Locals appreciate when visitors show an interest in their culture and history.
  • Tipping Etiquette:
Tipping is appreciated but not obligatory. In restaurants, rounding up the bill or leaving 5-10% is customary if the service was good. Tipping is also common for tour guides and taxi drivers, but small amounts are sufficient.
  • Quiet and Polite Behavior:
Baltic people tend to value reserved and polite behavior, especially in public spaces. Loud conversations or overly boisterous behavior might be considered disrespectful.
  • Greetings and Communication:
A friendly “hello” or nod of acknowledgment is appreciated in shops and when interacting with locals. While younger generations often speak English, learning a few basic phrases in Lithuanian, Latvian, or Estonian—like “thank you” (Ačiū in Lithuanian, Paldies in Latvian, and Aitäh in Estonian)—is a nice gesture and often warmly received.
  • Photography in Churches and Museums:
If you plan to take photos inside churches or museums, check for any signs indicating whether photography is allowed. Some sites may charge a small fee for photography or prohibit it entirely.
  • Public Transport Courtesy:
On buses and trams, it’s polite to offer your seat to elderly passengers or those with children. Public transport operates on a punctual schedule, so make sure to arrive at stops on time.

By observing these customs and showing respect for local traditions, you’ll not only enrich your travel experience but also leave a positive impression on the warm and welcoming people of Vilnius, Riga, and Tallinn.

Dress Code
In the Baltic Capitals, casual attire is generally acceptable in most urban settings, with smart-casual attire recommended for finer dining or formal occasions.

Responsible Dining
Avoid consuming endangered species or items harvested unsustainably. Be respectful of local customs and food practices, and always tip fairly to support local workers. Responsible dining helps protect the environment and promotes the well-being of local communities.

Safety and Security
Most national governments provide regularly updated foreign travel advice on safety issues involved with international travel. We recommend that you check your own government's advice for the most up-to-date travel information before departure and ensure that your travel insurance covers you for all destinations and activities on your trip.

Vilnius, Riga, and Tallinn are generally considered safe for travelers, with low crime rates compared to many other European cities. However, as with any destination, it’s always important to stay vigilant and take common-sense precautions to ensure a smooth and secure trip.

The cities are welcoming, and violent crime is rare. Petty crime, such as pickpocketing, can occasionally occur, particularly in crowded areas like tourist attractions, public transport, and busy markets. Be mindful of your belongings, especially in busy areas or when using public transport. A money belt or a secure bag can help keep valuables safe.

In case of an emergency, dial 112 for police, fire, or medical assistance in all three countries. English is commonly spoken by emergency responders, so you should be able to communicate if needed. It’s always a good idea to have your hotel address and important phone numbers handy.

While the cities are relatively safe to walk around, exercise caution late at night, particularly in less populated areas. Stick to well-lit streets, avoid unlit parks, and consider using taxis or ride-sharing services if traveling alone after dark.

Healthcare services in the Baltics are of good quality, and most hotels can help you find a local doctor or pharmacy if needed. Travel insurance with medical coverage is always recommended. Make sure you carry any essential medications with you, as they may be difficult to find in smaller towns

Although rare, be cautious of common tourist scams such as overcharging in taxis or being approached by street vendors offering goods at inflated prices. Always agree on a fare before getting into a taxi, or better yet, use a ride-hailing app. If in doubt, it's always safest to stick to official services or reputable establishments.

Keep your passport, identification, and travel documents secure at all times. It's a good idea to make photocopies of your passport, travel insurance, and credit cards and store them separately from the originals, in case of loss or theft.

By taking these basic precautions, you’ll be able to enjoy the rich history, culture, and beauty of the Baltics with peace of mind. These cities are known for their hospitality, and with a little attention to safety, your trip will be both enjoyable and secure.

Apps to Download
Some useful apps you may want to consider downloading before your tour include Google Translate, the lens function is especially useful when wanting to read product labels, signs, and menus. Google Maps with offline maps downloaded is great for easy navigation without being reliant on wifi.

There are several useful apps that can enhance your experience when visiting Vilnius, Riga, and Tallinn. These apps can help with navigation, communication, transportation, and local services, making it easier to explore the cities. Here are a few recommendations:

  • Vilnius: Vilniaus Viešasis Transportas – This app provides real-time public transport schedules, routes, and information on buses and trolleybuses in Vilnius.
  • Riga: Rīgas Satiksme – For real-time bus, tram, and trolleybus timetables in Riga, this app is helpful for planning your journey around the city.
  • Tallinn: Tallinna Linnatransport – This app gives you access to Tallinn’s public transport system, including buses, trolleys, and trams, with route information and timetables.
  • Bolt or Yandex Go (Ride-hailing apps) - If you prefer a taxi or ride-sharing service, Bolt (available in all three cities) is the most popular and widely used app in the Baltics. It's user-friendly, affordable, and available in English. Yandex Go is another option in Tallinn and some other cities in the region.
