Day 1: Iconic Times Square, great eats, and Broadway magic

Morning

There’s no better place to kick off your 48-hour itinerary in New York City than in the electric chaos of Times Square. Yes, it’s touristy—but it’s also undeniably iconic and a must-see! Stand under the towering LED billboards, snap a photo on the red steps, and simply soak up the atmosphere of one of the most recognisable hotspots in the world.

From here, you're perfectly positioned to explore Midtown Manhattan, home to several of the city’s top landmarks. Walk a few blocks uptown to visit Rockefeller Center, where you can take in the Art Deco architecture and head up to the Top of the Rock observation deck for jaw-dropping views of the skyline (an added bonus is seeing the Empire State Building from above).

If you're in the mood for a cultural detour, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) is just around the corner. It's one of the must-visit museums in New York City, with works by Van Gogh, Warhol, and Monet. Even a quick hour visit before lunch is worth it.

Lunch

Now it’s time to eat like a New Yorker, and nothing screams New York City lunch like a classic slice of pizza. Luckily, some of the best pizza places in the city are just a short walk away. If you’re coming from MoMA, John’s of Bleecker Street is in Greenwich Village and around a 15–20-minute walk away. Also located in Greenwich Village is Joe’s Pizza, which opened in 1975 by Joe Pozzuoli, a native Napolitan.

Prefer something a little more upscale? You could head to Chelsea Market, where you’ll find a huge range of cuisines—from tacos to ramen—and plenty of people-watching opportunities to go with it.

Afternoon

After you've gotten your bearings and seen some cultural icons, it’s time to dive into the city’s most legendary landmarks. First up: the Empire State Building, which remains one of the most iconic NYC landmarks to visit in two days. Admire this Art Deco marvel from street level or jump in the lift to the 86th floor.

Next, everyone’s favourite New Yorker: The Statue of Liberty. If you’re short on time, skip the full ferry ride and opt for a harbour cruise or the Staten Island Ferry—it’s free and offers excellent views of Lady Liberty without taking up the entire day.

As you move through Midtown, you’ll pass plenty of architectural and cultural touchstones—Grand Central Terminal, the New York Public Library, and Bryant Park, each worth a drop-in if you’re interested.

Dinner

After a full day of sightseeing—what a day!—it’s time to slow things down and treat yourself to a classic New York activity: dinner and a show. You’re in the heart of the Broadway theatre district, so grab a bite before curtain call at one of the many pre-theatre restaurants near Times Square. Becco on West 46th St is a homey Italian institution and a great spot for a pre-theatre meal; Gallagher’s Steakhouse has a classic NYC steakhouse vibe and has been called the “best steakhouse in New York” more than once; and The Lambs Club is a little more upscale, with an impressive prix fixe pre-theatre dinner menu.

After dark

After the final bow and curtain drop, head to The Skylark, just a few blocks away from the theatre district. Expect plush velvet seating, panoramic views of the Empire State Building, and craft cocktails.

For something a little more tucked away, slip into Lantern’s Keep, hidden inside the historic Iroquois Hotel. This intimate cocktail bar feels worlds away from Times Square’s buzz, serving expertly made drinks in a refined setting – the perfect place to chat about tomorrow’s plans.

Day 2: Greenwich, SoHo, and Brooklyn delights

Morning

Start your second day at a slower, more local pace. Begin with a late breakfast or early brunch at one of the best brunch spots in NYC, where the focus shifts from landmarks to neighbourhood life.

Head downtown to Greenwich Village, where, just like the movies, you’ll find cobblestone streets and brownstones. Pop into Buvette or The Grey Dog for a delicious start to the last day in the Big Apple. These charming cafés are beloved by locals and offer everything from light pastries and pancakes to hearty omelettes and breakfast bowls.

After brunch, enjoy a stroll through Washington Square Park—a true Village gem—and watch street performers, chess players, and dog walkers beneath the iconic arch. If you’re up for a little culture, head just 10 minutes east to the Merchant’s House Museum at 29 East 4th Street. This beautifully preserved 19th-century home offers a rare glimpse into old New York domestic life. It’s an underrated hidden gem and a must for anyone who loves history.

Lunch

If you haven’t already grabbed a bite at Chelsea Market, now’s your moment. You’ll find dozens of options under one roof—from fresh lobster rolls to ramen, tacos, and plant-based options.

For a cosy, sit-down experience nearby, head to Friedman’s at the Chelsea Market entrance—it’s known for its comfort food, hearty salads, and gluten-free options in a warm, welcoming space. For something quick and more-ish, Beyond Sushi is a vegan favourite with creative classics and desserts.

Afternoon

From the Village, make your way toward SoHo, home to some of the best shopping districts in Manhattan. This area blends high fashion with indie boutiques, art galleries, and coffee shops. Whether you're window shopping along Broadway or hunting for a statement piece on Prince Street, it's one of the most stylish, walkable parts of the city.

Explore beyond the main drag and check out Nolita, or North of Little Italy, just a few blocks away. With its mix of local designer shops, charming streetscapes, and lesser-known boutiques, it’s SoHo’s quieter, cooler cousin—and a perfect place to slow down and discover something unexpected.

Dinner

As the sun begins to dip, make your way toward the Brooklyn Bridge—one of New York’s most famous and photogenic landmarks. Walking across the bridge during golden hour is one of those can’t-miss NYC moments, offering stunning views of both Manhattan and Brooklyn. And don’t be surprised if your mind wanders back to all the movie scenes you’ve seen play out at this very spot!

Once you cross into DUMBO (Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass), Brooklyn’s artsy waterfront neighbourhood, settle in for dinner with a view. Top spots include Celestine for Mediterranean dishes (grab an outside table for water views); The River Café for upscale dining right under the bridge; or Juliana’s Pizza – yes, more pizza—but this time with a coal-fired oven and incredible views of Manhattan. Enjoy the calmer vibe of dinner in Brooklyn before heading back into the buzz.

After dark

Wrap up your final night in the city with a dose of New York nightlife. Head to Harriet’s Rooftop at 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge for cocktails and one of the best views of Manhattan at night.

Two days may fly by in the city that never sleeps, but with this whirlwind itinerary, you’ll leave with unforgettable memories, iconic snapshots, and a little bit of New York magic to carry with you—until your next Inspiring Vacations tour!

How to make like a New Yorker and maximise your 48 hours visit:

1. Prioritise your must-see spots: With limited time, focus on the landmarks and experiences that matter most to you. Whether it’s the Empire State Building, a Broadway show, or a trip to the Statue of Liberty, hit your top priorities first.
2.  Explore by neighbourhood: NYC’s charm lies in its neighbourhoods. Don’t rush—take time to explore different areas, whether it’s shopping in SoHo or people-watching in Greenwich Village.
3.  Take advantage of New York’s 24/7 lifestyle: Many attractions, like Times Square or the Brooklyn Bridge, are just as magical at night. Don't be afraid to explore after dark when the city takes on a different energy.
4.  Snack as you go: Street vendors and quick bites are part of NYC’s charm. Try a hot dog, pretzel, or a slice of pizza as you walk between sights—it's the New York way!
5.  Be flexible: While it's important to have a plan, leave room for spontaneity. Some of the best NYC moments come from unexpected discoveries.
6.  Use a MetroCard: Pick up a MetroCard to hop on the subway and get around easily, saving money, time and energy for the sights that matter most.
