Essential Information

Trip Suitability

  • Enjoy a flexible itinerary with the freedom to explore at your own pace, but be prepared to navigate the rail system on your own.
  • Switzerland’s trains are efficient and well-connected, making travel smooth, but a basic understanding of schedules and platforms will be helpful.
  • Some destinations may involve walking on cobblestone streets, gentle inclines, or historical sites with steps and uneven surfaces—comfortable footwear is recommended.
  • Switzerland is known for its high quality of life, reflected in prices for meals, souvenirs, and optional activities—budgeting accordingly is advised.
  • The itinerary balances structured train travel with free time, allowing you to personalise your experience. Popular attractions may require advance booking.
  • Weather varies by region and altitude—even in summer, alpine areas can be cool, and conditions can change quickly. Packing layers, including a waterproof jacket, is essential.

Visas & Entry Requirements
Many countries require a visa and obtaining the correct visa for your tour and any countries you may transit through is your responsibility. We recommend you check your visa requirements as soon as you have booked your tour. This will ensure you have time to prepare your documents and for your visa application to be processed. You can check the visa entry requirements for your nationality via our page here:

https://inspiringvacations-8357211.hs-sites.com/visa-information

You’ll need a valid passport to travel internationally and most countries require your passport to have a minimum of 6 months validity, so remember to check the expiry date.

We need your passport information to get everything ready for your tour so the information on your booking must match your passport exactly. Please take care to provide the correct details. We recommend carrying a copy of the photo page of your passport while travelling and leaving a copy at home with family or friends.

Travel Insurance
Travel insurance is strongly recommended on all our tours. We require that at a minimum you are covered for medical expenses including emergency repatriation. It is also important to consider forced pre-tour cancellations and how your chosen insurance policy may cover such circumstances, so please keep this in mind when choosing your provider.

We strongly recommend all travellers have a policy that also covers personal liability, cancellation, curtailment and loss of luggage or personal effects. For international tours, you will be asked by your tour leader for your travel insurance details if they were not already added to your Traveller Hub account pre-departure.

If you have credit card insurance your Inspiring Vacations tour leader or local guide may require details of the participating insurer/underwriter, the level of coverage, policy number, and emergency contact number rather than the bank's name and your credit card details. Please contact your bank for these details before arriving in-country.

Before you depart, you will be asked to submit your Travel Insurance details through the booking holder's Traveller Hub account through the Inspiring Vacations website. This is to ensure that we have this information readily available should we ever need it.

Health & Wellness
All travellers need to be in good physical health to participate fully on this tour. Our group tours are designed to immerse you in incredible sights and activities, often involving walking tours and self-exploration. To ensure you can fully embrace every moment, we recommend a moderate level of fitness for all of our tours.

When selecting your tour please make sure you have read through the itinerary carefully and assess your ability to manage and enjoy our style of travel. Please note that in the assessment of our Inspiring Vacations Tour Leader or local representative a traveller is unable to complete the itinerary without undue risk to themselves and/or the rest of the group, we reserve the right to exclude them from all or part of a tour without refund.

You should consult your doctor for up-to-date medical travel information or for any necessary vaccinations before departure. We recommend that you carry a first aid kit as well as any personal medical requirements in their original packaging as they may not easily be obtained while travelling. If you are carrying medication, ensure you check your government's foreign travel advice for any local restrictions or requirements. For the safety and wellbeing of yourself and others, if you are unwell before travelling, please stay at home and contact us to make alternative arrangements and we would be more than happy to assist you.

Important Information for Customers with Mobility Limitations

We want to ensure everyone has a fantastic and inclusive experience on our tours. If you require the use of a mobility aid, such as a cane, walker, or wheelchair, please disclose this information at the time of booking.

To ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience for the entire group, our tours are designed with a specific itinerary in mind. This may involve moderate walking, uneven terrain, or stairs. While some itinerary adjustments may not be possible, we'll do our best to find alternative solutions within the planned activities whenever possible.

Open communication helps us ensure your tour is a perfect fit and it allows your local guide or tour leader to assist you where possible.

Information for CPAP Users
If you use a CPAP machine, please let us know at the time of booking. Some portions of our itinerary, like overnight cruises or camping tours, may have limited access to power outlets. In such cases, we recommend travelling with portable battery packs.

Certain activities, like overnight journeys on board smaller vessels, may not be suitable for CPAP use due to space limitations or noise concerns. We can discuss these potential limitations upfront and help you make informed decisions about your tour.

Please ensure that you check the voltage used throughout the countries you are travelling to and if it will be compatible with your machines. For example, Japan runs on 100 volts vs Australia at 220-240 volts, meaning a voltage converter might be required.

Documentation
Tour documentation is typically emailed to the lead passenger or your travel agent between 14-30 days before your scheduled departure. This will include your final hotel list.

Child Policy
Children must be 5 years old or above and share a room with parents at all times. Children are charged the same price as adults.

If you would like to book something sooner, we recommend that you book using a flexible rate that can be cancelled through your chosen third-party provider without penalty.

Travellers will arrive at various times throughout the day depending on flights booked. If arriving before standard check-in time, which is generally 3pm, you are welcome to leave your luggage at hotel reception and explore your surroundings until check-in becomes available as there are no scheduled activities on day 1 of the itinerary.  The hotel may grant early check-in, however this is strictly subject to availability and at the hotel’s discretion.

Note: if you need to apply for a tourist visa before departure, we recommend using the details of the suggested hotel on the tour itinerary if you wish to fulfil this before the release of your final tour documentation. Please refer to our visa section for more information on whether or not a visa is required for your destination.

Arrival Details
Airport transfers are included as part of your package via rail from the airport to the hotel. After you arrive in Zurich, follow signs to the train station under Terminal B at the airport and take the S2 or S16 S-Bahn line to Zürich HB. The journey is approximately 12 minutes.

If you're having any problems finding the hotel, please ring the hotel directly or you can phone our customer support team for on-tour assistance.

In Case of Emergency
Although we strive to deliver exceptional holiday experiences, unforeseen circumstances can occasionally arise during travel. If any issues arise during your tour, it's essential to promptly communicate them to your tour leader or local representative. This ensures they can take immediate action to address the problem and mitigate any negative impact on the remainder of your journey.

We understand that there may be instances where your tour leader or local representative is unable to resolve a situation to your satisfaction. In such cases, we encourage you to request that the tour leader or local representative escalate the matter to their direct manager for further assistance.

When your final tour documentation is released, this will include an emergency contact for our local travel partner while you are on tour. If this is not included in your documentation, you will receive this on arrival during your welcome meeting.

Community Guidelines
Inspiring Vacations does not tolerate any kind of violence, harassment (whether physical, verbal or sexual), or disrespect toward fellow travellers, our teams (Inspiring Vacations Tour Leaders and local expert guides) or local communities.

Any behaviour that prevents your Inspiring Vacations Tour Leader from continuing the itinerary as planned, breaks local laws or opposes any of these guidelines, may result in Inspiring Vacations removing you from the tour.

If something concerns you during your travels, please speak to your Inspiring Vacations Tour Leader immediately. Alternatively, when you are on-tour and require immediate support you can contact our Customer Support team and select the “On-Tour” option when listening to the options.

Itinerary Changes
Sometimes, unexpected things can happen, like unpredictable weather or higher-than-usual crowds at attractions. In these situations, your tour leader might need to adjust the itinerary slightly to improve your overall experience.

This flexibility ensures you get the most out of your tour! Your tour leader will always keep you informed of any changes and explain the reasoning behind them. Remember, when travelling with a group, sometimes going with the flow can lead to even more amazing experiences.

Staying Connected
If you want to stay connected and access reliable internet while on tour, there are a few options available. It is possible to purchase a virtual sim and we recommend contacting your mobile phone provider for assistance. You can add a roaming data plan to your existing phone contract is another option, albeit an expensive one. You will need to arrange this before departure.

We also recommend downloading WhatsApp and using this to communicate with other group members while on tour, and of course, after the tour if you’d like to stay in touch. Our tour leaders may also use this as a means of communicating essential tour information with you, as well as if you choose to add-on transfers to your booking, as your driver may use this to confirm arrangements with you.

Getting Around
This tour allows you to explore Switzerland’s stunning landscapes and vibrant cities using the country’s world-renowned rail system. As an independent traveller, you will be responsible for navigating train schedules, transfers, and stations on your own, offering the freedom to explore at your own pace.
Switzerland’s rail network is efficient and scenic, connecting top destinations with comfortable trains and breathtaking views along the way. However, navigating independently means handling your own luggage at train stations, boarding and exiting trains, and making connections as needed. Elevators and escalators may not always be available, so packing light will make travel easier.
Some train stations and destinations may require walking on cobblestone streets, gentle inclines, or stairs, so comfortable footwear is recommended. While Swiss trains are known for their reliability and punctuality, travelers should be mindful of departure times and allow enough time to reach platforms.
Food and rest stops will be self-managed, with opportunities to grab meals at station cafés, local restaurants, or supermarkets along the way. This journey is ideal for those who love the freedom of independent travel, offering the flexibility to explore Switzerland’s iconic sights and hidden gems on their own terms.

Packing Essentials
What you need to pack for your Swiss rail journey will depend on your travel style and the time of year. We recommend packing as lightly as possible, ensuring you can easily carry and manage your luggage through train stations and on board the trains, which may involve stairs or short walks with your bags.

A lockable suitcase with wheels is ideal for ease of transport, and keeping your luggage under 23kg is strongly advised to make travel easier. You may also want to bring a small backpack (45-50 litres) for day trips, along with a day pack to carry water, snacks, a camera, and other essentials during your explorations.

Clothing: Pack a mix of lightweight and warm layers to handle Switzerland’s variable weather, plus a light, warm waterproof jacket for mountain and alpine areas.

Footwear: Comfortable, closed-toe shoes are essential for walking through towns, cities, and stations.

Sun Protection: Bring a hat, sunscreen, and sunglasses to protect yourself from the sun during outdoor activities.

Medical Kit: Carry personal items like pain relievers, Band-Aids, insect repellent, and any prescription medication.

Water Bottle: A refillable bottle (at least 1.5 litres) will help you stay hydrated while minimizing plastic waste.

Camera/Phone: Don’t forget to bring something to capture the breathtaking scenery.

Comfort Items: A good book or journal, earplugs, and music can make long train rides more enjoyable.

Travel Adapter: Switzerland uses Type C and J plugs with a voltage of 230V, so don’t forget to bring a power adapter for your devices.

Important Luggage Information

You’ll be responsible for managing your own luggage throughout your journey. This means handling your bags at train stations, navigating through platforms, and ensuring your luggage is easily manageable for boarding and disembarking the trains. Packing light and in a way that allows you to carry your own luggage comfortably will ensure a smoother experience throughout the trip. By following these packing guidelines, you’ll be set for a hassle-free and enjoyable Swiss rail adventure.

Climate
Switzerland in the summer offers a mix of pleasantly warm temperatures in the valleys and cities and cooler conditions in the alpine regions.

Lowland & City Areas (e.g., Zurich, Lucerne, Montreux) – Expect daytime temperatures between 20-30°C (68-86°F), with comfortable evenings. Rain showers can occur, so a light waterproof jacket is recommended.

Mountain & Alpine Regions (e.g., Zermatt, Jungfraujoch, Glacier Express route) – Higher elevations can be significantly cooler, with temperatures ranging from 5-15°C (41-59°F), even in summer. At peaks and glaciers, it can feel even colder, so warm layers are essential.

Weather Variability – Swiss weather can be unpredictable, especially in the mountains, where conditions can change rapidly. It’s always a good idea to dress in layers and be prepared for anything from sunshine to sudden showers.

With its crystal-clear air, abundant sunshine, and refreshing mountain breezes, summer in Switzerland is perfect for sightseeing and outdoor exploration. Packing versatile clothing will ensure you stay comfortable as you experience the country's diverse landscapes.

Currency and ATMs
Switzerland’s official currency is the Swiss Franc (CHF). While some tourist areas may accept euros, change will typically be given in Swiss Francs, and exchange rates may not be favorable. For the best value, it’s recommended to use CHF for all purchases.

  • Card Payments & ATMs – Credit and debit cards are widely accepted, especially in cities and larger towns. However, it’s always a good idea to carry some cash for smaller purchases, local markets, or mountain huts that may not accept cards. ATMs are readily available throughout the country.
  • Tipping Culture – Service charges are included in most bills, so tipping is not obligatory. However, rounding up the bill or leaving 5-10% for excellent service in restaurants is appreciated. For taxis and other services, rounding up to the nearest franc is common.
  • Exchange & Withdrawals – Currency exchange is available at airports, banks, and major train stations, though withdrawing CHF directly from ATMs usually provides the best exchange rate.

Switzerland is known for being more expensive than many European destinations, so budgeting accordingly for meals, activities, and personal expenses will ensure a smooth and enjoyable trip.

Food and Allergies
Switzerland is famous for its diverse and high-quality cuisine, influenced by German, French, and Italian traditions. From hearty alpine dishes to fine dining, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to indulge in local specialties like fondue, raclette, rösti, and Swiss chocolate.

  • Dietary Requirements – Most restaurants and hotels are accommodating of dietary needs, including vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and lactose-free options. However, choices may be more limited in smaller villages or traditional eateries, so informing your guide in advance can help ensure suitable meals.
  • Food Allergies – Swiss restaurants are generally well-informed about food allergens and often provide allergen information on menus. If you have severe allergies, it’s recommended to carry an allergy card in German, French, and Italian (Switzerland’s main languages) to communicate your needs clearly.
  • Self-Catering & Supermarkets – If you prefer more control over your meals, Switzerland’s supermarkets (such as Coop and Migros) offer a great selection of fresh, organic, and allergy-friendly products.

While Switzerland is known for its high food standards, it’s always a good idea to double-check ingredient lists and inform staff of any allergies to ensure a safe and enjoyable dining experience.

Local Customs
Switzerland has a rich cultural heritage and values politeness, punctuality, and respect for personal space. To ensure a smooth and respectful experience during your visit, here are a few local customs to keep in mind:

Punctuality – Swiss people take punctuality seriously, so always strive to be on time for guided tours, meals, and transportation. Arriving late is seen as disrespectful, and in both professional and social settings, being on time is highly valued.

Greetings – A handshake is the most common form of greeting in Switzerland, whether in business or casual settings. When meeting someone, make eye contact and offer a firm but friendly handshake. In more formal settings, a slight nod or "Grüezi" (in German-speaking regions) or "Bonjour" (in French-speaking areas) is also appreciated.

Respect for Nature – Swiss people are deeply committed to protecting their environment. Respect for nature is an integral part of Swiss life, and visitors are encouraged to dispose of trash properly and follow environmental guidelines when hiking or exploring natural areas.

Quiet in Public Spaces – The Swiss value peace and quiet, particularly in public spaces like trains, restaurants, and buses. Keep conversations at a moderate volume and avoid speaking on the phone in public areas to maintain a calm and respectful atmosphere.

Tipping – Tipping is not compulsory in Switzerland, as service charges are typically included in the bill. However, rounding up the bill or leaving a 5-10% tip for excellent service in restaurants is common. Tipping for taxi drivers or hotel staff is also appreciated but not expected.

Dining Etiquette – When dining, keep your hands on the table (but not your elbows), and wait for everyone to be served before starting your meal. Swiss dining culture places a strong emphasis on conversation, so enjoy relaxed and polite discussions during meals.

By respecting these local customs, you’ll show appreciation for Swiss culture and enhance your travel experience.

Dress Code
Switzerland is known for its smart casual dress code, with an emphasis on neatness and practicality. While you won’t need to dress formally for most activities, it’s important to dress appropriately for both the climate and cultural norms. Here are a few tips to help you pack:

Casual & Comfortable – During the day, especially when exploring cities, comfortable casual clothing is perfectly acceptable. Think jeans, breathable shirts, light sweaters, and practical footwear suitable for walking.

Dining Out – In more formal dining settings (especially in 5-star restaurants), you may want to bring dressier attire, such as a nice pair of pants or a smart dress and shoes. In casual restaurants or local eateries, casual attire is perfectly fine.

Religious or Cultural Sites – When visiting churches or religious sites, it’s respectful to dress modestly. This means covering shoulders and avoiding overly revealing clothing. A light scarf or jacket can easily cover exposed shoulders if needed.

Overall, the key is to dress for comfort while being mindful of the occasion and location. A neat, well-put-together look will ensure you’re both comfortable and respectful of Swiss culture.

Responsible Dining
Switzerland is deeply committed to sustainability, and as a traveller, you can support local efforts by choosing seasonal, locally-sourced dishes. Opt for meals that feature Swiss produce, meats, and cheeses to enjoy fresh, eco-friendly flavors. Support sustainable seafood by looking for certifications like MSC and try local wine, beer, and spirits, which are made with eco-conscious methods. Additionally, consider minimizing food waste by ordering appropriately and taking home leftovers when possible.

To further reduce your environmental impact, bring a reusable water bottle and avoid single-use plastics. Many restaurants are moving toward sustainable practices by using paper straws or offering alternatives. Finally, always dispose of trash properly and respect the environment, especially when dining outdoors. By following these responsible dining practices, you can enjoy Switzerland’s culinary offerings while contributing to its environmental efforts.

Peak Travel Times
Switzerland’s peak travel time occurs during the summer months (June to August), when the country’s natural beauty is in full bloom. The warm weather makes it the perfect time for outdoor activities like hiking, cycling, and exploring the cities and lakes. Popular tourist destinations such as Zurich, Lucerne, Interlaken, and Zermatt see larger crowds during this period, especially in well-known locations like the Jungfraujoch and Lake Geneva.

For those seeking a quieter, more relaxed experience, spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) are excellent alternatives. The weather is still mild, the scenery is stunning with spring blooms or autumn foliage, and there are fewer tourists, allowing for a more peaceful experience at Switzerland’s popular sites. These shoulder seasons also offer better value for money, making them ideal for travelers who prefer a more serene and cost-effective visit.

Safety and Security
Most national governments provide regularly updated foreign travel advice on safety issues involved with international travel. We recommend that you check your own government's advice for the most up-to-date travel information before departure and ensure that your travel insurance covers you for all destinations and activities on your trip.

Switzerland is generally a very safe destination for travelers, with low crime rates and a high level of security in both urban and rural areas. However, as with any destination, it’s always a good idea to stay aware of your surroundings and take basic precautions. In busy tourist areas or on public transportation, it’s wise to keep an eye on your belongings to avoid petty theft, such as pickpocketing. Avoid displaying valuables in crowded areas and be cautious in unfamiliar places.

While Switzerland is very safe, especially in well-populated cities like Zurich, Geneva, and Lucerne, it’s always advisable to use reputable transportation services and avoid walking alone at night in poorly lit or deserted areas.

In the countryside and mountainous regions, Switzerland is peaceful and secure, but always be mindful of the weather and terrain when hiking or exploring more remote areas. Overall, Switzerland offers a relaxed and safe travel experience, but common-sense precautions will help ensure your safety throughout your journey.

Apps to Download
Some useful apps you may want to consider downloading before your tour include Google Translate, the lens function is especially useful when wanting to read product labels, signs, and menus. Google Maps with offline maps downloaded is great for easy navigation without being reliant on wifi.

The official app for the Swiss Federal Railways, SBB Mobile provides real-time updates on train schedules, routes, ticket bookings, and even details about public transportation. It's invaluable for navigating Switzerland's extensive and efficient rail network.

For those planning to shop for Swiss souvenirs, the Reka app is useful for discovering the best spots to buy Swiss products, and it provides discounts on local stores and experiences.

Downloading these apps before you travel will help you navigate Switzerland with ease and make your experience even more enjoyable. We also recommend downloading WhatsApp before you leave and using this to communicate with other group members while on tour.
