Welcome to Tokyo! You’ll be met in the arrivals hall and transferred to the hotel by shuttle.
On arrival, please check in and collect your welcome pack from the front desk. The rest of the day is at your leisure.
Tokyo is arguably one of the most extraordinary capital cities on the planet. It’s the world’s most populous metropolis but very modern and efficient – it’s a breeze to get around on its excellent subway network. To get a view of this buzzing city, head to the Tokyo Skytree for incredible panoramic views from its observation decks, at 350 and 450 metres high. Tokyo Tower – a bright orange Eiffel Tower-inspired structure – also has two observation decks. The Shibuya Crossing is a must-see, with its neon displays and hordes of people crossing the intersection. It’s hectic, crazy and so Tokyo.
If it’s shopping you’re interested in, Tokyo is home to some of the world’s biggest and most unusual shopping experiences. The Akihabara district is known for tech shops and otaku and anime culture. The Ginza district, the city’s busiest shopping area, is also a great spot to just stop and watch the world go by. Or rush by, rather. If you need some respite from the frenetic pace of this city, head for the serenity of Ueno Park, the city’s largest green space and home to numerous temples and museums. There’s even a zoo here.
Please note: Some flights may depart the day before.
Check in: Passengers will be arriving at various times throughout the day from as early as 6am through to late evening. If arriving prior to standard check-in time, which is generally 3pm local time, you are welcome to leave your luggage with hotel reception and explore your surroundings until check-in becomes available, as there are generally no scheduled activities on Day 1 of the itinerary. The hotel may grant early check-in, however this is strictly subject to availability and at the hotels discretion.
Today we’ll enjoy a full day’s sightseeing in Japan’s capital and the world’s most populated megalopolis – the Tokyo metropolitan area spreads over three prefectures with 38 million residents.
We’ll start with a visit to the Tsukiji market, the world’s largest fish market.
We'll then head to the Imperial Palace, the primary residence of the Emperor of Japan. Previously home to samurai warriors, it’s a sprawling complex with its beautiful 17th-century parks in the heart of the city. Built on the site of the old Edo castle, it is surrounded by a large park, moats and massive stone walls. Come cherry blossom season, it is blanketed in a sea of pink blooms.
Next we’ll visit Sensō-ji Temple, Tokyo’s oldest temple. It’s dedicated to Kannon, the Buddhist goddess of mercy. Then, enjoy Hamarikyu, a beautiful landscape garden that has served many purposes over the centuries. It was originally built as a feudal lord’s Tokyo residence and duck hunting grounds during the Edo period, but later served as a strolling garden and an imperial detached palace, before eventually being opened to the public in its current form. After this we’ll enjoy a picturesque cruise on the Sumida River, which runs from Hamarikyu to Asakusa.
This evening, you'll go on a brief walking tour of the Shibuiya and Shinjuku districts, taking in all the sights and sounds of this electic city. Following this you will join your guide and the rest of your group for an official welcome dinner.
We’ll leave Tokyo this morning after breakfast and head north to Nikko, one of Japan’s most famous mountain towns. All coach transportation on your luxury tour includes two seats for every guest, for maximum comfort.
First stop is the Nikko Toshogu Shrine. Enclosed in dense forest and hailed as Japan’s most lavish shrine, it’s the final resting place of shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu. Most of the shrine complex was rebuilt in the 17th century and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999.
We'll then enjoy a cruise on nearby Lake Chuzenji, at the foot of Nikko’s sacred volcano Mount Nantai. The best way to see Lake Chuzenji is by boat, and you’ll enjoy the spectacular scenery on your cruise no matter the season.
Nikko is home to 48 beautiful waterfalls, the most famous of which is Kegon Waterfall, standing almost 100 metres tall. We'll take the elevator to the observation deck.
This evening, enjoy dinner at a local restaurant.
Please note: Scheduled sightseeing in Nikko during the peak travel season may be disrupted due to heavy traffic
After breakfast, we’ll depart for Hakone, a mountainous town that lies within Japan’s Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park. Hakone is known for its hot springs (onsen) and mesmerising views of UNESCO World Heritage Site Mount Fuji. It is, quite simply, picture perfect.
Our tour starts at Oshino Hakkai. The word Hakkai means “Eight Seas” which refers to the eight pools of water that serve as the main attraction of Oshino Hakkai. Bridges and pathways lead around and over these tranquil ponds. These eight ponds (Deguchi, Okama, Sokonashi, Choushi, Waku, Nigori, Kagami, and Shoubu) are the beautiful byproduct of historic eruptions and intense volcanic activity. There will be time to get some lunch before heading to our next stop.
Following this, we will visit Hakone Shrine, famous for its iconic red torii, “Gate of Peace”, that floats on the waters of Lake Ashi. The lake sits within the caldera of Mount Hakone. Our scenic boat ride on Lake Ashi will provide great views of Mount Fuji. Boats inspired by western warships cruise the scenic lake, and the picturesque, forested region has been popular with hikers and sightseers for centuries.
Tonight, enjoy a kaiseki dinner at the hotel – a lavish spread of many small dishes like soups and sashimi.
This morning, we’ll enjoy a scenic experience on the cable car to Owakudani. Gondolas depart every minute and travelling the full length of the ropeway takes approximately 30 minutes. Along the journey, enjoy views of the active, sulfuric hot spring sources of the Owakudani Valley between Sounzan and Owakudani, and of Lake Ashinoko and Mount Fuji between Owakudani and Togendai if visibility allows.
The afternoon is free time for you where you can take advantage of your Hakone Free Pass, giving you free transportation throughout Hakone to reach popular attractions.
Tonight, enjoy another traditional kaiseki dinner at your hotel this evening.
You may choose to include 2 optional Inspiring Sights throughout your tour, free as part of your package.
Visit the fascinating Hakone Tokaido Checkpoint, which operated for about 260 years during the Edo period as an inspection facility to control ‘incoming guns and outgoing women’. We’ll then stoll through the Hakone Open-Air Museum; Japan’s first outdoor, open-air museum of art. You’ll see sculptures by Rodin, Picasso, Calder and more, with the stunning Hakone mountains as the backdrop. There is even a Picasso Pavilion.
This morning, your luggage will be sent ahead to meet you at your hotel in Hiroshima, as we’ll travel by bullet train, in luxurious green class. Before we head off, we catch the Hakone mountain railway to Odawara before transferring to the bullet train. This is the only mountain railway in Japan. The train departs from Hakone-Yumoto station (at 96 m above sea level) and takes about 40 minutes to arrive at the final stop, Gora station (at 541 m above sea level). It is a special experience that can be enjoyed only with the Hakone Tozan Train.
Upon arrival in Hiroshima, the rest of the evening is free for you to relax or explore this peaceful city.
You may choose to include 2 optional Inspiring Sights throughout your tour, free as part of your package.
Tonight, you will be able to enjoy an Okonomiyaki dinner. Okonomiyaki is a famous Japanese pancake, famed in Hiroshima for its layering of ingredients including batter, cabbage and pork to which you can add optional items such as squid, octopus or more vegetables.
After breakfast, your guide will meet you in the hotel lobby before a full day touring by private coach.
We'll start with the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, home to the ruins of Genbaku Dome, one of the few buildings that was left standing near ground zero. In Hiroshima today, locals have mixed feelings about the UNESCO World Heritage Site structure: some see it as a reminder of war, while others consider it a tribute to the lost that ensures we'll never forget the tragic events that took place here.
Here we'll visit the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, located in the Peace Memorial Park. It’s a sobering but important experience. The flame in the cenotaph is intended to burn until the last nuclear weapon has been destroyed.
Then we'll visit Miyajima Island. Known for its lush forests, ancient temples, and freely roaming sika deer, this island is just as popular with Japanese tourists as it is with international visitors. Just offshore we'll spy a 'floating' vermilion torii, which becomes partially submerged at high tide. It marks the entrance to the Itsukushima Shrine, which was first built in the 12th century. Nearby, the Museum of History and Folklore houses cultural artifacts in a 19th-century merchant’s home.
Lunch is a delectable oyster lunch at a local restaurant.
Note: Your luggage transfer will arrive today to your hotel.
This morning we’ll depart for Kyoto by bullet train, travelling in luxurious green class. Your luggage will be transferred to Kyoto to meet you tomorrow.
On the way, we’ll stop at Himeji Castle, the largest surviving example of a traditional Japanese castle. Comprising 83 buildings, the white roof of this UNESCO-registered complex is said to evoke the wings of a heron taking flight, hence the popular name ‘Shirasagi-jō’, meaning White Heron Castle. Himeji Castle is said to be the most visited in Japan, and the site offers some wonderful views of surrounding Himeji city.
After lunch in a local restaurant, we’ll then continue to Kyoto. Considered by many to be the jewel in Japan’s crown, Kyoto is one of the only cities in Japan to escape destruction during World World II, leaving its countless relics intact.
The evening is free for you in Kyoto to explore this ancient capital.
Please note: Today your luggage will be transferred to Kyoto in preparation for our arrival. You will need to pack an overnight bag and your luggage will arrive on Day 9.
You may choose to include 2 optional Inspiring Sights throughout your tour, free as part of your package.
Visit local spots rarely discovered by tourists, such as the quirky Yasui Konpira-gu Shrine, said to strengthen good relationships – or sever bad ones. We’ll journey through history, from the wooden walls and lanterns of Yasaka Shrine to the bustle of Karasuma’s quirky standing bars, tachinomi. Enjoy tasty snacks as you soak up the lively atmosphere.
Today we’ll visit some of Kyoto’s most iconic sites, like the Kinkakuji (Golden Pavilion). This is a Zen temple and UNESCO World Heritage Site, with two floors covered entirely in thin layers of pure gold, set within a beautiful classical Zen garden.
We'll also take in breathtaking Nijō Castle. Constructed in the 17th century under the orders of Tokugawa Ieyasu, Nijō Castle's buildings are arguably the best surviving examples of castle palace architecture of Japan's feudal era, and as such it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994.
We’ll visit Ryoanji Temple, the site of Japan’s most famous rock garden and finish at Nishiki Market, a five-block long shopping street where everything from seafood to handmade Japanese knives are sold.
It’s a free day for you in Kyoto. Perhaps stroll the streets of Gion, Kyoto's most famous geisha district. With any luck you might spot a geisha, otherwise known as a geiko or maiko.
This evening, enjoy a delicious Sukiyaki farewell dinner with the group and tour guide to celebrate your time in Japan.
You may choose to include 2 optional Inspiring Sights throughout your tour, free as part of your package.
Visit this ancient capital of Japan and get up close to the fabled, holy deer of Nara. We’ll visit UNESCO-listed Kofukuji Temple and Todaiji Temple, one of the oldest Buddhist temples in Japan and home to the country’s largest Buddha statue. Stroll the beautiful backstreets of old town and discover handicraft havens, quirky shops and traditional machiya houses. Watch the turtles going about their daily lives at the tranquil, picturesque Sarusawa pond. You’ll also taste some of the best street food in the city.
Enjoy one last delicious breakfast this morning, before your Japanese adventure comes to an end. Later you will be transferred to Osaka airport to board your flight home.
We hope you’ve enjoyed this extraordinary journey.
Check out: Passengers will be departing at various times throughout the day. Standard hotel check-out times will apply no matter what time your flight is scheduled to depart. Check-out time is generally anywhere from 10am-12pm. You are welcome to leave your luggage at hotel reception and spend your final moments of free time exploring the area or alternatively please speak with hotel staff if you would like to extend your check-out time. Please note this service is subject to availability and will likely come at an additional cost. Your tour guide (or hotel staff) will confirm the time of your airport transfer with you directly.
Arrive home today after your amazing adventure, we hope you have been Inspired!

Green Class
Green Cars are clearly marked with the words “Green Car” in English and the four-leaf clover symbol. Shinkansen (bullet trains) and JR tokkyu (limited express trains) usually have at least one Green Car per train. Green Car seats are usually more spacious and comfortable than ordinary seats. On the shinkansen, there are only four seats per row in the Green Car, versus five in ordinary cars. Green Car seats also have more legroom. Green Car seats also tend to be more luxurious, with features like electric reclining and in-seat reading lights.
Group Size
4-10 people.
Fitness Requirements
While the tour itinerary should give you some guidance and overview to the expected requirements, to determine if this tour is right for you we categorise each of our tours in terms of their intensity. These guidelines are to ensure that each tour group is conducted as expected and to ensure the overall satisfaction of all Inspiring Vacations customers.
As a general rule, porterage is not included, therefore at all times you are expected to handle your own luggage where help may not be available.
This particular tour is categorised as a “3”:
3 – Moderate Tour: A good level of fitness and mobility is required, as this tour includes a moderate level of physical activity and is considered a medium-fast paced tour. You should be able to walk up and down stairs, get on and off the coach and able to walk reasonable distances of approximately 2 kilometres per day or more with ease. Any physical ailments you may have must be disclosed at the time of booking to determine your suitability. If you have any form of walking aids, other than a walking stick or hiking poles, then this tour is not suitable.
Accommodation
The accommodation listed is subject to change. Any changes will be of an equal or higher standard. Bedding configurations (double or twin) are requests only. All efforts will be made to meet your preferences however any changes are beyond our control.
Twin Share Bedding Configuration
At any time, bedding configuration is subject to confirmation by the hotel and based on availability. While you have the option to select either twin or double bedding at time of booking, our recommendation when travelling to Japan is to choose twin bedding, as the rooms are often bigger than those that have a double bed. If insisting on double bedding, please note that the rooms will be smaller and more narrow. As a general expectation, we cannot always guarantee bedding at all hotel stays.
Single Supplement
Single supplement is $5,500 per person in addition to the twin share price.
Please note when choosing Single Supplement for this deal that you will receive a single room, which is smaller in size than a twin/double room. Unfortunately this is typical for Japan, as the cost to solely occupy a double/twin size room is incredibly high. We appreciate your understanding.
Triple Share
Not available.
Porterage & Luggage Requirements
Porterage is included in your package, this means that you will have someone assist with your luggage between coach and the hotel throughout the tour. While understanding that various airlines will have their own luggage requirements, please note that for the comfort of yourselves, as well as our local partners who assist you on the ground, we restrict the luggage allowance to no more than one suitcase at 20kg per person, plus a small backpack / carry on size bag. This is to ensure that there is enough storage on the coach, as well as when travelling via rail (where applicable in the itinerary).
Where internal flights are applicable in your itinerary, please note that the airline allowance will vary and if you exceed the airline allowance, excess baggage fees may apply.
Coach Transportation
Our standard bus size is a 20 seater, this will accommodate our group of no more than 10 guests. Please keep in mind that while the flight, accommodation and guide arrangements are luxury, the coach transportation provided, while not luxurious in a sense, still provides comfortable, air-conditioned and spacious seating.
Travel Insurance
Travel insurance is required to protect yourself against the unexpected.
We have partnered with nib to offer our customers competitive rates for their travel insurance. You can book comprehensive or budget cover simply by clicking HERE to arrange your policy.
