Welcome to Perth! If you fly into Perth, please make your way to Hertz airport depot to collect your car. Once you collect your car, make your way to your starting point hotel.
If you arrive in Perth by land, make your way to Hertz downtown depot to collect your vehicle. Hertz Car Rental Perth downtown, is located on 475 Murray St, Perth and the opening hours on Saturdays is 8am to 1pm. This depot is closed on Sundays.
Please let us know 60 days prior to departure if you will collect your vehicle from Perth airport (we will need your flight details) or Perth Hertz downtown
After you check-in at your hotel, you can head out and explore Perth.
Today you will start driving east. You may want to make your first pit stop at Mundaring (about 130km from Perth) and visit the Mundaring Weir which marks the beginning of the Golden Pipeline Trail and it’s one of Western Australia’s biggest engineering feats of all times.
As you keep driving towards Northam you will notice the famous Public Art Silo Trail - giant murals painted on a collection of wheat silos.
Given the remoteness and short supply of accommodation, your final accommodation for tonight will be advised 30 days prior to your departure.
Distance driven: Between 260km to 370km - 4hrs to 5hrs
Continue along Great Eastern Highway to Coolgardie. On the way, don’t miss Westonia, a delightful small town with a main street full of old shop facades, a working gold mine and a beautiful lookout. The Westonia Hood-Penn Museum is a quirky stop that showcases early life in the shire, and has a vibrating mine tunnel where you can experience what it was like to work in an early gold mine.
After Westonia, take a drive past Karalee Rocks. These granite rock formations were originally used to collect water and channel it into a dam, where it was used for both drinking and to fuel steam trains. If you have time to stop, there are a few tranquil walk trails around the rocks to explore.
Distance driven: Between 230km to 330km - 3hrs to 4hrs
Today make your way to 250 Hannan Street to join your Super Pit tour. This two and a half hour tour will take you through the workshop, the milling plant and to the internal viewing platforms.
Throw on a safety vest and safety glasses and experience a tour of Australia’s largest gold producing mine, the Super Pit. You will be a visitor inducted to the KCGM Super Pit then taken into the operational mine-site to view the mining and milling operations from the safety of the air-conditioned Mine-Spec Bus.
Be amazed by the sheer size of the CAT 793 Haul trucks as you travel through the tracks of the site. The view of the Super Pit from the Harvey Hut and Golden Pike lookouts offer fantastic panoramic photo opportunities as you watch the massive face-shovels load ore into the trucks. Having worked in the mining industry your guide will be a wealth of knowledge as you are told about the history of the ‘Golden Mile’ and how the Super Pit operates today. Get ready to throw on your safety gear and see this booming industry up-close!
In the afternoon, make your way to Kalgoorlie Airport to join your scenic flight. Head out over the impressive Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mine “Super Pit.” Visible from space, at over 3.5km long, 1.5km wide and 600 metres deep, the Super Pit is truly something to behold. After circling the Super pit to get an all-angles view, you will fly out to the Nickel Smelter before continuing south to Kambalda and Lake Lefroy. Lake Lefroy is a magnificent salt lake which stands out from the surrounding area by its pure white, gleaming colour and extreme lack of vegetation. Popular for land sailing, part of the lakebed is also unusual in that it is home to several open cut mining operations. The contrast between the stark white salt and the sudden transition to deep mining excavations makes for an impressive view.
Depending on conditions, there can be a shallow layer of water on the lakebed, which on a calm day creates breathtaking reflections that will give you the opportunity to take award-winning photographs.
Enjoy breakfasts and start heading south toward Hayden. Your accommodation for tonight is at Hyden, only a short drive from Wave Rock.
Approximate driving distance: 380km/5hrs
Today is free for you to explore Hyde and Wave Rock.
You may want to wake up early and head over to Lake Magic to experience the lake at sunrise and marvel as the colour changes as the sun comes up over the horizon.
Later on, explore Wave Rock itself - one of Australia’s most recognisable landforms. Rising 15 metres from the ground and more than 100 metres long, the rock looks like a giant surf wave of multicoloured granite about to crash onto the bush below. It’s believed this amazing formation was more than 2,700 million years in the making. Take a bush walk around the rock to see native flowers and birds.
Later, perhaps visit the Wave Rock Salt Baths - a 20m round, 6m deep swimming pool-like gypsum pond whose buoyancy and therapeutic properties are greater than those of the Dead Sea
Today you will continue driving towards Margaret River, one of Australia's largest wine regions. With more than 200 vineyards, Margaret River produces more than 25% of Australia’s premium wine.
Approximate driving distance: 470km - 6hrs
Today enjoy a guided Margaret River wine tour experiencing the region’s amazing food, wine and culture. You will be collected from your accommodation at approximately 9.30am and get the day started with a coffee tasting at a local roaster before heading to your first boutique winery experience for the day. Experience first hand the subtle flavours of extra virgin olive oils before enjoying a relaxing lunch and cleansing ale at a local brewery. The afternoon will see you two cellar doors including a cheese & wine pairing. Finish off the day with a visit to a chocolate factory to indulge in all things cocoa.
Today is free for you to continue exploring the area. If wine is the name of the game, take your time to explore some of the 90 cellar doors in the region.
Alternatively you way want to explore the Canal Rocks - granitic rocks that jut into the ocean and are separated by a series of canals carved by the sea - a true open air class of geology. You will be able to cross the canals and witness the force of the ocean via recently built bridges. This site is located approximately 45km north of Margare River.
Another optios is exploring the caving system. It is difficult to choose the best cave to visit. You can marvel at the reflections on Lake Cave’s permanent lake, be dwarfed in Jewel Cave’s enormous chambers and take it easy on the Mammoth Cave self- guided tour. At Yallingup’s Ngilgi Cave, you will learn the Aboriginal legend as you look up at limestone shawl formations– or delve deeper into the cave on an adventure tour. Cave opening hours and tours start from 9am and finish between 4pm and 5pm. Entry fee is approximately $22.50 per adult.
If travelling between late July and August, you want to consider a cruise to witness the mighty Humpback on their migration path. This tour departs from Augusta, 50km south of Margaret River
Today you will make your way to Augusta, approx 50kms from your accommodation. Your tour will start on an amazing luxury catamaran to take you out to the magnificent Western Australia Whales. The vessel has 5 viewing decks over three levels from which you can sight the magnificent Humpback, Southern Right and occasionally, the very rare Blue Whale along with Seals, Dolphins and migratory bird life from all over the world.
Season runs from May to August
Duration approx 2 hours
Start the last driving leg of your trip.
On the way north, you may want to stop at Busselton Jetty. This 150+ year old timber jetty stretches 1.84km into the Geographe Bay - making it the longest timber jetty in the Southern Hemisphere. Whether you walk to the end or take the jetty train, make sure to check out the Underwater Observatory for a glimpse of the sea life that inhabits this artificial environment.
Further north, you may want to pay a visit to the Dolphin Discovery Centre, in Bunbury. Walk down to the “interaction zone” for an opportunity to say to the many dolphins that visit this bay all year round. There is no entrance fee but please make sure you follow the instructions of dolphin volunteers
If you’re feeling peckish, you may want to explore Bunbury Farmers market, which opens daily from 7.30am to 5.30pm.
Approximate driving distance: 278 km - 4hrs
Today your Western Australia Deluxe Road Trip comes to an end. Please return your vehicle to Hertz Fremantle Downtown depot at the same time you picked it up from Perth (additional charges may apply otherwise).
