Angela shares her experiences on our 19 Day Inspiring South America tour
What prompted you to book your tour?
My brother and his wife found this tour and were planning on booking. Machu Picchu has been on my bucket list since I was young. I'm usually a big planner, however the timing and price were right so my sister and I decided to embrace the opportunity and join them with four months to go before departure!
Did your expectations meet reality?
I was a little unsure about what to expect. I had never travelled like this before with so many internal flights, however I was not disappointed. The guides met us at each airport, and were there to answer and assist us even on our free days—they exceeded expectations. Eduardo, our awesome guide who helped us retrieve our lost shoes after we left at Iguazu Falls, to Maira who took us to do laundry in Rio. Not only were the guides great, but the location of the hotels were, too. Our Buenos Aires accommodation was central and our room in Rio had beautiful views of the beach and the Christ the Redeemer.
What were the highlights of this tour for you?
Machu Picchu was the draw card for this trip however I was surprised it was not my highlight. Experiencing Halloween in Puno was incredible, along with Uros floating islands. I really enjoyed learning about their fascinating culture and meeting friendly locals.
Any surprises?
Being vegetarian I was worried about the food, but I had no problems. In the Amazon everyone else was envious as my food looked better than theirs, and there were ample options for me at the Brazilian BBQ. An unwanted surprise was that my sister, brother and two others from the group had lost luggage, however our guide Carlitos worked diligently and had it sent to us.
Did you do any optional tours?
We did the Gran Aventura boat ride at Iguazu Falls, which I highly recommend. We also visited the Ollantaytambo site—it’s not a tour, just pay the entrance fee and then you hike/explore your own way to the top.
What do you say to those pondering whether or not to book?
If you are unsure about this tour or have not heard of Inspiring Vacations and are hesitant to book, I would say this tour will not disappoint. It was well-organised with fantastic, friendly and knowledgeable guides. Eduardo was fantastic in Iguazu, smiley Gladys was great in Peru, Carlitos in Machu Picchu, and I can't forget Jordie and Gilbert, two fantastic guides in the Amazon.
Any travel tips you'd like to share?
Join the Inspiring Vacations Facebook group before you travel. Past travellers post helpful tips and photos. It helped me a lot in organising pre-and post-tour activities, as well as getting information on flights, vaccinations, money cards, wifi needs and packing tips. Creating a WhatsApp group is also an easy way to share group photos. Our group became handy on the free days when we wanted to meet up or do things together.
